Soulbound tells you whether a specific Bomb Farm item or hero can move through the Steam Market. It does not measure combat strength, rarity, or usefulness. A bound item can be excellent equipment, and a tradable item can be wrong for every active hero.

Current Soulbound rules at a glance

Source or actionCurrent result
Hero opened from a Soulbound cageRemains Soulbound
Drop after an extended no-reward periodSoulbound
Regular eligible dropCan remain tradable, subject to other rules
Item or hero fusion using five materialsNew result does not inherit Soulbound status
Star Ritual on an existing heroExisting behavior; not the fusion exception

These rules were clarified in the August 31 and September 1 developer updates. Check the live card because updates and individual eligibility still matter.

Fusion creates a new object

The key logic is creation versus modification. Fusion consumes five materials and creates a new item or hero. The new result no longer inherits Soulbound status from those materials. It may be sent to Steam if it also meets rarity and Market-access requirements.

Star Ritual modifies an existing hero. It does not create a separate result, so it does not use the new fusion exception. Heroes opened from a Soulbound cage also remain bound because opening the cage is not the same operation as fusion.

Tradable does not mean sellable right now

An unbound result can still be blocked by:

  • the item’s or hero’s remaining rarity eligibility;
  • account Market access;
  • the Easy 5-10 selling requirement;
  • lack of an active VIP Pass when the progression requirement is incomplete;
  • Steam processing or synchronization state;
  • a card or chest rule shown in the current client.

The Bomb Farm Steam Market guide explains selling and bringing items separately.

Extended returns and regular drops

The September 1 balance adjustment says drops granted after an extended period without receiving rewards are Soulbound, while regular drops remain tradable. Return Bonus and boosts are added together; the developer’s example combines +80% and +100% into x2.8.

Do not assume that a high displayed return bonus creates liquid Steam value. The source of the reward can determine binding.

Chest and tooltip verification

The latest patch added possible-drop and tradability information to chests and corrected inaccurate chest trading information. It also improved Market messages and rarity frames on Steam equipment images.

Use those signals in this order:

  1. Read the chest or reward source before opening.
  2. Inspect the resulting card’s Soulbound status.
  3. Check rarity and Market eligibility.
  4. Confirm account selling access.
  5. Decide whether the account benefits more from equipping, fusing, or selling.

Do not launder strategy through fusion

The fusion exception can make a new result unbound, but consuming useful materials solely to chase tradability can weaken the account. Compare the five inputs with the range of possible results and the progression value they already provide.

For hero-specific material decisions, read Bomb Farm fusion and rarity. For equipment, read Gear and Ritual.

The September 1 balance note says drops granted after an extended period without receiving rewards are Soulbound, while regular drops remain tradable.
